One of my key mantras that I want you to adopt for yourself is “movement is medicine”—powerful preventative stuff that keeps your arteries clear, your body young, and your muscles strong; it also relieves stress and has even more benefits for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The changes and adaptations the body makes as a result of regular exercise are nothing short of amazing. Exercise ignites the body’s immune system, improves mental function, boosts energy, burns body fat, and reduces the risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Now I want you to take a moment to pause, and remove any preexisting fears relating to your perception of movement. Reframing your mind-set about your workouts, seeing them as an asset and not as an opportunity to fail or look foolish, will be key in your ability to not just take on a physical challenge, but to keep it going! You will come to realize that bringing more movement into your life can be as simple as parking at the back of the lot at the mall or grocery store and walking to the door, or as intense as full-fledged weekly interval workouts with weight training. It will look different for everybody, so remove any internal judgement on where you may or may not be ready for and find your starting line.
